Wax Paper

Learn how Gee Hoe Seng Pte Ltd (GHS) handles the responsible disposal of wax paper and wax-coated packaging materials in Singapore.

Wax paper is not recyclable due to its coating, which prevents the separation of paper fibers during the pulping process. However, paper cores from wax paper rolls are recyclable if separated properly.

Why It Cannot Be Recycled

Discover why wax paper cannot be processed through conventional paper recycling and how separating recyclable parts improves recovery rates.

Here’s why recycling doesn’t work

  • Wax coatings form a moisture-resistant barrier that prevents water absorption during pulping.
  • The wax layer contaminates recycling batches and clogs processing machinery.
Not Recyclable
  • Wax-coated paper sheets or packaging
  • Food wrapping paper with wax or grease coating
  • Wax paper rolls (if not separated from core)

Note: Always separate paper cores from wax paper before recycling. The wax-coated sheets must be disposed of as general waste, while clean paper cores can go into paper recycling.

Additional Information
Wax-coated sheets must be disposed of as general waste, while clean paper cores can go into paper recycling. Loads containing wax-coated paper mixed with normal paper may cause contamination and lead to downgraded or rejected recycling batches.

How to Prepare Before Collection / Drop-Off

  • Separate wax paper from paper cores – Only the paper core is recyclable.

  • Dispose of wax paper sheets – Place in general waste bins.

  • Do not mix wax paper with recyclable papers – It causes contamination and reduces the quality of recycled pulp.
