Laminated Paper

Learn how Gee Hoe Seng Pte Ltd (GHS) handles the proper identification and disposal of laminated papers, catalogues, and brochures in Singapore.

While most papers are recyclable, laminated papers are not. The thin plastic film coating used for lamination makes them resistant to tearing and prevents the fibers from being separated during the pulping process.

Is it Recyclable?

No — laminated papers are not recyclable.

Lamination adds a plastic layer to paper to make it glossy, durable, and water-resistant. However, this coating blocks the recycling process and contaminates clean paper streams.

Why It Cannot Be Recycled

Laminated papers are made by bonding paper fibers and plastic film together using heat and adhesive. This combination cannot be separated during recycling.

Here’s why it prevents recycling

  • The plastic film cannot dissolve or break down in water during pulping.
  • The adhesive used to bond layers clogs recycling equipment.
  • When shredded, laminated paper produces plastic flakes, contaminating clean pulp.
Not Recyclable
  • Name cards with glossy plastic coating
  • Brochures, catalogues, or flyers with laminate finish
  • Magazine covers and photo paper

How to Identify Laminated Paper

Tear the paper gently.

  • If it tears smoothly, it is recyclable.
  • If it stretches, crumples, or resists tearing, it is laminated and non-recyclable.

Check the edge of the tear.

  • A thin plastic film layer will be visible if the paper is laminated.

When in doubt, perform the tear test — it’s the quickest way to tell if your paper is recyclable.

Additional Information
Laminated papers cannot be pulped and must be disposed of as general waste.

How to Prepare Before Collection / Drop-Off

  • Separate laminated materials – Keep them apart from recyclable paper to avoid contamination.

  • Do not mix with clean paper recyclables.

  • Dispose of laminated papers in general waste bins.
