Arch File

Learn how Gee Hoe Seng Pte Ltd (GHS) handles the disposal and partial recycling of arch files in Singapore.

Arch files are common in offices, schools, and storage systems. They are typically made of a mix of cardboard, metal, and vinyl (plastic coating) — making them difficult to recycle as a complete unit. While some components are recyclable, others must be disposed of as general waste.

Used arch files and office stationery waste prepared for proper disposal in Singapore.

Is it Recyclable?

Partially — Arch files are not fully recyclable.

They are made from multiple materials — metal mechanisms, cardboard boards, and vinyl or plastic sleeves — which are bonded together with adhesives. Because of this, the entire file cannot be processed as one item.

However, certain parts can still be recovered and recycled separately.

Why Is It Difficult to Recycle?

Understand which parts of an arch file can be recycled and which cannot.

Here’s why full recycling isn’t possible

  • Vinyl or plastic cover – Glued to the cardboard and cannot be separated.
  • Cardboard backing – Contaminated with adhesive and vinyl, not suitable for paper recycling.
Not Recyclable
  • Vinyl or plastic sleeve wrapped around the cardboard
  • Cardboard backing (due to glue and vinyl contamination)
  • Fully assembled arch files that have not been separated

How to Recycle or Dispose

  • Remove the metal ring mechanism — Pop it out and place it with other metal recyclables.
  • Take out paper inserts or dividers — Recycle clean paper through the paper recycling stream.
  • Dispose of the vinyl-covered cardboard body — This part must go into general waste.
Recyclable
  • Metal rings and clips – Remove and recycle as scrap iron.
  • Loose papers or dividers – Recycle as paper waste if clean and unlaminated.

Note: Always dismantle arch files before recycling. Do not place whole files into paper or metal recycling bins — they will contaminate other recyclables.

Additional Information
