Is it Recyclable?

Yes — servers and server racks are recyclable, but not as a whole unit.

Each component contains a mix of metals, circuit boards, and wiring, which must be dismantled and sorted before processing.

At GHS, we perform in-house dismantling and recycling to recover valuable materials while ensuring all data-bearing parts such as hard drives and SSDs are securely handled.

What Parts of a Server or Rack Are Recyclable?

Discover how server recycling contributes to a circular IT ecosystem while protecting sensitive information.

Here’s why recycling works

  • Servers and racks contain high-value metals such as aluminum, and stainless steel that can be extracted and reused.
  • Circuit boards and processors contain recoverable precious metals.
  • Hard drives, RAM, and power supplies can be safely dismantled for parts recovery or destruction.
Recyclable
  • Server Rack Enclosure
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Power supply unit (PSU)
  • Motherboard
  • RAM / memory chips
  • Hard disk drive (HDD / SSD)

What limits recyclability

  • Certain plastic-metal composites cannot be separated efficiently.
  • Contaminated or corroded units are unsuitable for material recovery.
Not Recyclable
  • Plastic components or covers

Note: You do not need to dismantle your servers or racks — simply ensure ensure all servers and racks are safely disconnected before collection for our team to process.

Additional Information

1) Some recyclable IT or server components may incur disposal charges to cover collection, handling, and secure data destruction costs. For example, empty server racks may be chargeable due to their size and handling requirements.
2) Certificates of Destruction are available upon request and subject to administrative charges.

How to Prepare Before Collection / Drop-Off

  • Disconnect but do not dismantle — ensure servers are unplugged from power and network cables before collection.

  • Do not include general waste, packaging materials, or non-electronic items with your servers or racks.
