Food Waste Recycling in Singapore

Singapore’s Waste Recycling Trends

2024 Food Recycling Rate 18%
2023 Food Recycling Rate 18%
2022 Food Recycling Rate 18%

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), food recycling rates in Singapore has shown little improvement in recent years.

In 2024, Singapore generated 784 thousand tonnes of food waste, but only 18% (138 thousand tonnes) were recycled. Much of this food waste comes from households, food manufacturers, unsold food and food preparation residues. By improving food waste recycling through composting, anaerobic digestion, and black soldier fly treatment, Singapore can recover valuable nutrients and energy — supporting a more sustainable, circular food system.

What is Food Waste Recycling?

Food waste recycling is the process of converting discarded food into useful by-products through environmentally sustainable methods. At Gee Hoe Seng, we collect and manage food waste from commercial and industrial sources, preparing it for downstream recycling partners who process the materials into valuable resources.

Depending on the type of waste, food materials can be recycled through several key processes:

1. Composting
Organic waste such as fruits and vegetables are broken down into nutrient-rich compost, ideal for soil enrichment and landscaping use.
2. Anaerobic Digestion
Food waste is biologically decomposed in oxygen-free conditions to produce biogas and digestate (a natural fertilizer).
3. Black Soldier Fly Treatment
Certain food waste streams, such as grains and organic residues, are used to cultivate black soldier fly larvae.

By diverting food waste from incineration and converting it into useful resources, Gee Hoe Seng supports Singapore’s vision for a circular, resource-efficient economy — where nothing goes to waste.

Our Food Recycling Process

At Gee Hoe Seng, we manage the first and most essential stages of Singapore’s food waste recycling chain — collection and sorting. We ensure food waste is safely recovered, separated, and prepared for downstream partners who process it through composting, anaerobic digestion, or black soldier fly (BSF) treatment.

Together, this five-step process converts discarded food waste into valuable resources that support circular economy goals.

1. Food Waste Collection

Food waste is collected from factories and food manufacturers using our own fleet of vehicles. Our in-house team ensures timely, and compliant collection for all clients.

2. Sorting & Pre-Treatment

Collected waste is sorted to remove contaminants such as packaging, plastics, or non-organic items. Clean organic waste is separated for downstream recycling, ensuring the highest recovery.

3. Composting Process

Organic materials like fruit and vegetable waste are biologically decomposed into nutrient-rich compost, ideal for landscaping, farming, and soil restoration.

4. Anaerobic Digestion

Food waste with high moisture or energy content undergoes anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break it down in oxygen-free tanks. This process produces biogas and digestate.

5. Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Treatment

Certain food waste streams, such as grains and plant residues, are used to cultivate black soldier fly larvae closing the loop in sustainable waste management.
