Brass

Learn how Gee Hoe Seng Pte Ltd (GHS) handles the collection and recycling of brass in Singapore responsibly and efficiently.

Brass, an alloy made primarily of copper and zinc, is durable, corrosion-resistant, and widely used in household fixtures, machinery, and automotive components. Recycling brass helps conserve valuable resources, reduce energy consumption, and minimize waste going to incineration.

Is it Recyclable?

Yes — brass is recyclable.

Brass can be melted down and reformed without losing its quality or properties.

At GHS, we collect, sort, and process all grades of brass, ensuring that every batch is handled safely and sustainably.

Why and What Parts Can Be Recycled?

Discover which components can be recovered, how the recycling process works, and what limits recyclability.

Here’s why recycling works

  • Brass is a non-ferrous metal that retains its value even after multiple recycling cycles.
  • Recycling brass uses far less energy than extracting new copper and zinc from ores.
Recyclable
  • Pure brass rods, sheets, or blocks
  • Brass fixtures and fittings (e.g. doorknobs, taps, hinges)
  • Brass components from machinery, vehicles, or instruments

What limits recyclability

  • Mixed metals such as brass combined with steel or aluminium reduce recovery purity.
  • Burnt or oxidized brass may require further treatment before recycling.
Not Recyclable
  • Brass items with plastic, rubber, or steel attachments
  • Contaminated brass mixed with general waste

Note: You do not need to polish or cut the brass. Simply ensure it is clean, dry, and free from other materials or attachments before collection.

Additional Information
Clean, pure brass yields a higher recycling value. Loads containing mixed metals, coatings, or non-brass components may be subjected to reduced weight valuation due to contamination.

How to Prepare Before Collection / Drop-Off

  • Keep brass separate – Do not mix brass with other metals such as copper or aluminium.

  • Remove non-brass components – Detach screws, fittings, or plastic parts where possible.

  • Do not include brass items with oil, paint, or heavy dirt.
