Envelope

Learn how Gee Hoe Seng Pte Ltd (GHS) manages the proper disposal and recycling of paper envelopes, including those with plastic windows.

Envelopes are recyclable, but special attention should be given to those with plastic film windows. While one or two plastic windows will not cause major contamination, large quantities can reduce the overall recycling quality.

Is it Recyclable?

Yes — envelopes are recyclable, but plastic film windows should be removed whenever possible.

The paper portion of an envelope is recyclable through regular paper recycling streams. However, the plastic window is non-recyclable and should be separated to maintain paper purity and prevent plastic contamination during the recycling process.

Why and What Parts Can Be Recycled?

Discover which components can be recovered, how the recycling process works, and what limits recyclability.

Here’s why recycling works

  • Envelopes are made primarily of paper fibers, which can be pulped and reused to make new paper products.
  • Removing plastic windows ensures cleaner recycling streams and higher recovery value.
Recyclable
  • Plain paper envelopes
  • Coloured paper envelopes
  • Kraft envelopes
  • Envelopes with stamps or minimal adhesive (no need to remove)

What limits recyclability

  • Plastic film windows that are not removed add to contamination.
  • Laminated, metallic, or glossy gift envelopes are not recyclable.
Not Recyclable
  • Plastic windows or film attachments
  • Metallic or laminated envelopes

Note: Always remove the plastic film to maintain high-grade paper recovery.

Additional Information
Loads with high plastic contamination may incur handling or processing charges for extra sorting.

How to Prepare Before Collection / Drop-Off

  • Remove plastic windows – Tear out or cut off the film section before recycling.

  • Sort by type – Sort them into the different categories, white paper, kraft paper, and coloured paper for easier processing and higher recycling value.

  • Keep dry and clean – Avoid recycling wet, oily, or food-stained envelopes.

  • Do not include general waste or food waste with your envelopes.
